A Very Special Memorial Day!
It's been many years since our last vacation with Mom and Dad, making this trip even more special. Despite turning 76 on June 5th and 77 on July 15th, respectively, they remain remarkably healthy and adventurous. I'm blessed to have such wonderful parents who pulled their camper over 1,800 miles for another unforgettable journey!
Memorial Day Adventure: Heart Mountain Museum
We began our Memorial Day travels on Hwy 14, heading to the Heart Mountain Museum. I kept noticing this beautiful mountain that you could see far away in the distance at a 8,123 elevation.
I wasn't familiar with this National Monument, which stands as a heart breaking reminder of a dark chapter in American history. In 1943, over 14,000 Japanese Americans were unjustly incarcerated here, taken from their homes and businesses, and bused to this camp in Park County, Wyoming.
The Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation works to preserve the site and tells the stories of those who were confined. In August 2011, they opened the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, a world-class museum dedicated to educating future generations about this period. Visiting the museum was a deeply moving experience. And I couldn't help but notice who brought love and hope to this camp during this horrific time! Yes! Local Churches!
A Memorable Dinner: Vietnam Veterans Reunite
Before I continue with today's journey, I want to share one of the coolest moments from our trip, which occurred last night at dinner. Dad proudly wore his Vietnam Vet hat when a man approached him at a nearby table. As they started talking, they discovered they were both veterans, served as gunmen in Vietnam, were stationed at Fort Ord, CA, and attended the same A.I.T. training at Fort Eustis, VA. It was surreal watching these two men connect over their shared experiences. As my dad often says, "I shouldn't even be here." As I write this, my heart races, and tears flow. I'm so thankful for my dad, his service to our country, and all the men and women who serve selflessly. Thank you! What a fantastic way to start Memorial Day 2024. I am one proud daughter!
Journey to Montana: Bighorn Canyon National
Continuing our adventure on Hwy 14, we crossed into Montana and headed to Bighorn Canyon National Forest.
Our destination was the Devil's Canyon overlook, where the views were nothing short of breathtaking. The vast canyons, the serene quietness, and the sheer beauty of the landscape left us in awe. Words can hardly capture the magnificence of what we witnessed; it's an experience unlike any other.
Celebrating Mom's Birthday: Cattle Company Dinner Show
We returned to Cody for a night of celebration to officially mark Mom's birthday. Our venue was the Cattle Company Dinner Show, an absolute must-visit! The dinner was the best food in Cody, featuring an all-you-can-eat feast of brisket, chicken, beans, potatoes, mac and cheese, cornbread, and brownie with ice cream for dessert. Despite being stuffed after one plate, the food was irresistible.
After dinner, we enjoyed a performance of authentic old cowboy music by an incredibly talented band. The music was family-friendly and some of the best we’ve ever heard. It was the perfect way to end our day, filled with good food, great music, and cherished family moments.
This trip, filled with history, unexpected reunions, stunning landscapes, and heartfelt celebrations, has been truly unforgettable. I'm so grateful for these experiences and the time spent with my adventurous parents. Here’s to many more journeys and cherished memories!
Reflecting on the Day
As I reflect on the day's events, my heart is full of gratitude. Every moment was special, from the emotional visit to the Heart Mountain Museum to the reunion of Vietnam veterans, and finally, celebration of Mom's birthday. This Memorial Day, I'm reminded of the importance of family, the sacrifices of our veterans, and the beauty of exploring new places together. I am immensely proud and thankful for my parents and the incredible experiences we share.
